History:
Huntington Forest Park is located in the Mandarin area of southeast Jacksonville, east of Old St. Augustine Road. In 1819, after America obtained control of Florida from Spain, the area’s name was changed to Mandarin, after the popular Chinese orange being grown in the area. With the opening of the St. Johns River Bridge (Acosta Bridge) in 1921, Mandarin began to grow slowly, but after the Buckman Bridge opened in 1970 and Interstates 95 and 295 became linked, residential growth exploded. The Riverside Group, the developer of the Huntington Forest subdivision, donated the land for the park to the City in 1986. With a lake bisecting the property and trees throughout the grounds, the site presents a nice setting for a neighborhood park.
My thoughts on this Park:
As I pulled up two women were leaving with their doges, clipping the leases back on so I assume they were having some play time. This is a great park, I sat in the shade of the pines for over an hour. There are lots of pine trees in this park. There was a water fountain visible from the bank of the lake that backs up to two sides of this park. The bank is a great place to sit. There were two men fishing here, I suspect it was more about the camaraderie of friends more than catching fish, they pulled a few small ones in while I was there. The sounds of the fountain was all I really heard after a while, it was nice. At a house across the river it appeared that a complete living room set was all setup on the patio, not sure what was going on there but it seemed odd.
